Authority Dog Food: Review (1)

About Authority

Authority was launched by well-known pet retailer, PetSmart in 1995. Their products are expertly formulated, science-backed foods, developed with the guidance of vets, researchers, and pet nutritionists from the Healthy Pet Advisory Council.

Their pet food offers both balanced and high-quality nutrition at a great price. From food that targets specific health needs to various life stages, they offer a variety of choices to satisfy the health and hunger of your pup.

Authority uses essential vitamins and minerals to support your dog’s immune system while boosting the formulas with fiber and probiotics for digestive support. Their dog food range includes recipes for puppies, seniors, large to small breeds, and food for dogs with sensitive stomachs or coats.

From what we can tell, Authority has received mostly positive reviews. They source the majority of their ingredients locally and all their products are made in the US.

Now that you know more about Authority, you’re ready to assess their products to determine whether it’s suitable for your dog. To help you decide, we’ve reviewed their highest-rated dry and grain-free dog food below.

The top dry dog food for Authority is their large breed puppy food. Large breeds require their own unique diets, as they are fueling their play, as well as their growth. So a product loaded with fats, protein, vitamins, minerals, and omegas is needed to maintain a healthy weight and lean muscle growth. Authority has delivered with the puppy food.

There is 26% protein, and 13% fat coming from high-quality protein sources (deboned chicken, and chicken meal). A nice touch is the natural source of glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate in the recipe, which support a growing puppy’s joints and mobility (important as they age). Authority also has a unique Ora-Shield System, which is designed to reduce plaque and keep dog’s teeth healthy. It can be very hard to try and brush your puppy’s teeth, so might as well give them some food that helps!

Customer reviews:

“Our puppy’s breeder recommended Authority. Bella, the little German Shepherd, loves it. She digests it easily and has firm stools. Her vet appointments have been great – I would recommend this dog food to anyone who has a puppy.”

“My almost 6-month-old shepherd/lab/pitt puppy loves this food and I love the ingredients for the price! Many other brands are priced much higher for similar ingredients.”

Authority High Performance Grain-Free Turkey, Pea, Duck & Salmon Formula Dry Dog Food

Authority Dog Food: Review (3)

First 5 ingredients:
  1. Deboned Turkey
  2. Chicken Meal
  3. Dried Peas
  4. Turkey Meal
  5. Chicken Fat

What we like:
  • First ingredient deboned Turkey
  • High in protein
  • Grain free
  • Aids healthy teeth

Authority makes great grain-free dog food, that is bursting with valuable nutrients! Made using deboned Turkey as the main ingredient, this recipe has 30% protein and 20% fats providing a great foundation for any dog, at any life stage.

This recipe has no artificial colors, flavors, preservatives, or chicken by-products, so you can feel comfortable that your pup is eating a well-formulated food. The fact that it has a relatively high-fat content means that it is high in omegas, which help support healthy skin and a shiny coat. Like the previous Authority recipe, the grain-free formula uses Authority’s Ora-Shield to reduce tartar and plaque, and keep your dog smiling!

Customer reviews:

“My puppy had been real lethargic and throwing up. It was recommended to try this and WOW. After the first time eating it she hadn’t gotten sick and had so much more energy than before. 1 happy puppy and a very happy mama.”

“The ingredients are great. It has decent quality proteins with minimal fillers. My dog loves her food. She has not experienced any digestive issues. She has healthy bowel movements. I would recommend and repurchase.”

Brand Recalls

While Authority has a pretty impressive track record, their cat food was recalled once in 2007. A large number of brands recalled their products at this time due to ingredients from China that were melamine-contaminated. But the brand has since had a clean record when it comes to recalls.
