Read the passage from Sugar Changed the World. In 1733, Parliament ruled that an extra six cents must be added to the price of every gallon of molasses that did not come from an English source. If the colonists actually followed the rules of the Molasses Act, it would have terrible consequences. Molasses from French islands would now be too expensive—merchants could never make a profit. So they would have to turn to the English, who would surely raise their prices. This one law could cripple the entire North American trade with the sugar islands—if, that is, the colonists or the French followed the rules. But of course they did just the opposite.
The Molasses Act accomplished nothing except to make Americans better smugglers. Yet the act was renewed again and again—until the crucial year of 1763. Just as the Molasses Act was due to expire, England completed its victory over France in the global contest known as the Seven Years’ War (the segment of that war fought in North America is often called the French and Indian War). To pay for the war, the prime minister decided to put some teeth into the legislation. Now called the Sugar Act, the law was designed to make sure the American colonists stopped smuggling and paid their sugar tax.

an explanation of the results of the Seven Years’ War

Read the passage from Sugar Changed the World. The English public, now consuming some eighteen pounds of sugar a year, knew little about the lives of the enslaved Africans whose labor sweetened their meals. Worse yet, every Englishman who hammered the wood, sewed the sails, manufactured the rope for slave ships, or built the barrels to hold slave-harvested sugar made his money from the slave trade. The English were getting richer because Africans were being turned into property. Clarkson and others who believed as he did, who in the coming decades would be called abolitionists, realized that while that link gave the English a stake in slavery, it also gave the antislavery forces an opportunity. If they could reverse the flow—make the horrors of slavery visible to those who benefited from it—they might be able to end the vile practice forever.
The abolitionists were brilliant. They created the most effective public relations campaign in history, inventing techniques that we use to this day. When he spoke, Clarkson brandished whips and handcuffs used on slaves; he published testimonials from sailors and ship doctors who described the atrocities and punishments on slave ships. When Olaudah Equiano published his memoir, he educated his readers about the horrors of the slave trade. And then, when the English began to understand what slavery really was, Clarkson and others organized what we would call a boycott of "the blood-sweetened beverage."
Which excerpt from the passage best states the authors' claim?
"The English were getting richer because Africans were being turned into property."
". . . while that link gave the English a stake in slavery, it also gave the antislavery forces an opportunity."
"They created the most effective public relations campaign in history, inventing techniques that we use to this day."
". . . Clarkson and others organized what we would call a boycott of 'the blood-sweetened beverage.'"

The answer is:
"They created the most effective public relations campaign in history, inventing techniques that we use to this day."
In the excerpt from "Sugar Changed the World," the author Marina Budhos makes reference to how Clarkson and other abolitionists made the abominations of the slavery system evident to those who made a profit out of it. For example, the exhibition of whips, handcuffs, testimonials and Equiano's memoir.
In the passage from Sugar Changed the World, the author provides some context about slavery in England to later on describe the efforts of the abolitionists to end this practice. The text explains the different techniques they used to make a campaign that helped them inform people about the cruelty of slavery. Therefore, the excerpt that best states the author's claim is C: They created the most effective public relations campaign in history, inventing techniques that we use to this day"
One is always in the position of having to decide between amputation and gangrene. Amputation is swift but time may prove that the amputation was not necessary — or one may delay the amputation too long. Gangrene is slow, but it is impossible to be sure that one is reading one's symptoms right. The idea of going through life as a cripple is more than one can bear, and equally unbearable is the risk of swelling up slowly, in agony, with poison. Which sentence best explains how the use of metaphor in the excerpt supports Baldwin's purpose? A.It uses a description of hatred that appeals to the senses and helps readers better understand its usefulness. B.It shows the evil of hatred by comparing its elimination to a choice between two equally dangerous choices. C.It reveals the best method for eradicating hatred by comparing the results of two types of medical procedures. D.It links hatred and a medical procedure to show that hatred should be surgically removed from society.

Which statement best describes the effect of Theseus's first failure to move the stone on Theseus? A. It taught Theseus to be patient
B. It made Theseus lose respect for his absent father
C. It made Theseus want to take revenge on the boys who laughed at him
D. It made Theseus want to give up.
Answers
The stamen that best describes the effect of Theseus’s first failure to move the stone is option A “It taught him to be patient”. According to the legend, Theseus was a hero of Athens and had mystical powers. When Theseus was 15 years old, he was taken by her mother to the mountain and she asked her to lift a stone and bring her what was underneath. But he couldn’t do it, so her mother told her they would try next year and so they tried for several years but he couldn’t lift the stone. So before turning 18, he trained to become strong and finally was able to lift the stone. Theseus, according to the legend, became the bravest man on earth.
This story shows that Theseus never gave up his idea of lifting the stone. He didn’t want revenge on anybody and he did not lose respect of his absent father since he didn’t know his father was related to the stone. Therefore, option A is the correct one as he went year by year to lift the stone until he finally did it.

The answer is B. Person's
Possesives for nouns are formed by adding 's to a singular noun (Like person's) or a plural noun ending in any letter but s (like men's), and just adding ' to a plural noun ending in s (like cars')
Answer: The correct possesive form for the noun "person" is B. person's.
Explanation: The possesive in English is formed by adding an apostrophe and an "s" to a noun. Taking this into account, option B. (person's) is the one that provides the correct possesive form for the noun "person" since it includes an apostrophe and an "s" immediately after this noun. In contrast, option A. is incorrect because the "s" should be added after the apostrophe. Moreover, option C. is also incorrect because it does not include the apostrophe: it only presents the plural form of "person". Furthermore, option D. changes the noun from "person" to "people", which is also incorrect.

Read the paragraph from John F. Kennedy’s “Speech at American University.” Our interests converge, however, not only in defending the frontiers of freedom, but in pursuing the paths of peace. It is our hope—and the purpose of allied policies—to convince the Soviet Union that she, too, should let each nation choose its own future, so long as that choice does not interfere with the choices of others. The Communist drive to impose their political and economic system on others is the primary cause of world tension today. For there can be no doubt that, if all nations could refrain from interfering in the self determination of others, the peace would be much more assured. John F. Kennedy’s statement that the Soviet Union needs to stop imposing its systems on others is supported by the premise that __________. Which option most effectively completes the sentence?
